The mystic area of Bugarach

While the World Wide Web is full of articles on alleged mystic activities in the area of Bugarach the Southern French village seems to be nothing but beautiful. It’s unbelievable HOW beautiful. Legends of a treasure buried in the impressive mountain Pic de Bugarach provided the place with a mysterious atmosphere long before the prediction appeared online. It came totally out of the blue and it is still unclear who published it. The message was basically: In December 2012 when the apocalypse will take place (at least according to the Mayans) Bugarach will be the only place that will be spared. It didn’t take long for this prediction to find its way into popular mystery culture. Googling Bugarach and apocalypse you’ll be overwhelmed with trashy, twinkling websites in neon colors telling you there is a UFO garage in the mountain of Bugarach. Esoterics of all kind offer tutorials in the area on how to organize your inner energy and so on. Aside from that the place is quite a hippie resort due to its thermal sources and the geological magnetism there.
Bugarach itself is a lonely place. About 200 people live there. But how comes there is a long waiting line in front of the mayor’s office? Journalists from everywhere are longing to interview the guy on his mystic area. The mayor himself seems to enjoy the excitement although he seemingly pretends to be unnerved by the masses of foreign journalists always wanting to interview him. Some years ago the village created a postcard of Bugarach with a UFO wafting above Bugarach. Something in his explanations made me suspect he made it all up, though. He admits he is fueling the stories to attract some more tourists. In fact he is bending the truth more than he says. Most of the articles on Bugarach include quotes by the mayor only. Apparently he told journalists about people in white clothes taking long silent walks through Bugarach and naked priests in the mountains. The longer I think about it the more I doubt he  ever saw at least one mysterious phenomenon in his area. But to end with his words: “If you create a miracle it can happen.”Read the whole story in the next issue of Red Bull’s “2012″-magazine. It’s in German language and will be published on 12 April.
